Breast Augmentation Information
Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a popular procedure to increase breast size. Implants are used to create larger breasts and can correct many size and shape problems. This type of breast enhancement may occasionally be performed in conjunction with a breast lift.
Is it for you?
The decision to undergo breast augmentation may be done for a variety of personal and individual reasons. Some women feel conscious about their breast size, shape or evenness while others lose breast volume or shape through time, weight loss or pregnancy.
The pre-existing shape and size of your breasts will influence both the recommended treatment and the final results.
Why choose a Re. Surgeon?
Every Re. surgeon is highly experienced and focused on your safety and wellbeing. From consultation to follow-up, we ensure you’re in the right hands.
As part of this process, your surgeon will carefully examine you and discuss your own expectations and treatment goals. Key details including the type, shape and size of the implant, as well as the location and position of scars will be made together with your surgeon. Each patient and procedure is different and making informed decisions is important in determining what will work best for you.
We use the latest imaging and simulation software to help you make decisions about your surgery and breast implant choices. Read more about the Vectra 3D Imaging System.
What to expect
Breast augmentation surgery is performed as a day surgery procedure under a general anaesthetic. In most cases, you can expect to return to your usual routine after a few days, but excessive lifting and vigorous exercise should be avoided for the first few weeks.
It is normal to feel tired and sore following surgery. Pain medication and antibiotics will be prescribed to help alleviate discomfort and reduce the risk of infection. Swelling of the breasts may many weeks and it is advised that you remain in a support bra without underwires for four to six weeks.
You can expect scars to stay firm and pink coloured for at least six weeks, but will begin to fade after several months, taking on more of a natural tone by six to twelve months.
Implants come in a range shapes and sizes in order to match different frames and desired looks. Re. Plastic Surgeons use cohesive silicone gel-filled breast implants, as they provide the best combination of feel, longevity and safety.
Breast implant size is measured in cubic centimeters and does not correspond to traditional bra cup sizes. The larger the implant, the higher the volume – for example, a 300cc implant is larger than a 250cc implant. Choosing the right size implant can be the most challenging decision regarding the operation. Fortunately, there are many ways to help determine what is the best size for you.
Re. Plastic Surgeons use the Vectra 3D Imaging System to help show you what different size implants will look like on your exact frame prior to surgery.
The profile of an implant indicates the distance the implant will project your breast from your body. A higher profile breast implant will create a more prominent silhouette than a lower profile breast implant. Deciding what implant profile is best for you will depend on your own body and personal preferences.
Implants are available in two distinct shapes: teardrop and round.
Teardrops shaped implants are thinner at the top and gently slope to a fuller projection point near the implant’s lower portion – closely mirroring the silhouette of a natural breast.
Round breast implants are circular and able to shift slightly once positioned without distorting the shape of the breast.
However, as every body and frame is unique, there is no best type of implant – just the best implant for you.

- Breast augmentation does not correct significantly sagging breasts. A breast lift (mastopexy), which involves removing excess skin and shifting the nipple position, may be required for this concern.
- You are able to breastfeed with breast implants.
- There are two types of materials used in breast implants in Australia: saline and silicone.
- It’s important to understand breast implants do not last forever. Future surgeries may be required to replace one or both implants.
- There is no need for implants to be routinely changed and rupture rates with modern implants are very low.
