A look into the breast reduction journey

1 hour

A relaxed, no obligation consultation

Every procedure starts with a private, no-commitment conversation with either Richard or Kim, the founding surgeons of Re. Plastic Surgery. We want to know your dream body and how we can help you reach that goal.

2-3 months

Your first appointment

Our surgeons’ wait lists are constantly changing but prepare for a 2-3 month wait to have your first consultation. This is a good thing! If a surgeon can see you straight away ask yourself why they aren’t busy operating or in high demand. These consultations last around an hour with your surgeon taking your pre-surgery photos, explaining what’s involved in an operation and understanding your desired outcomes. You’ll also have an in-depth, personal quote with our surgical co-ordinator that is valid for 3 months.

2-3 months

Your surgery date

Once you’ve paid your deposit for your surgery, wait times will fluctuate depending on time of the year and your procedure, but allow for a 2 – 3 month wait time.

1-2 weeks

Prepare for surgery

We know this is an exciting transformation, so we promise to be there every step of the way. From pre-surgery consults, check-ins with your surgeon all the way to post-op laser and LED appointments with our dermal therapist.

1 day

Day of procedure

You will wake up in the recovery bay of the hospital and your breasts will feel swollen but comfortable. You’ll be wearing your complimentary post-surgical bra to support your new breast shape. Most patients will stay a night in hospital for monitoring and the best aftercare.

1-2 weeks

The early days

The first 48-72 hours are mildly uncomfortable but will be well controlled with pain medication. It is okay to shower and get your dressings wet and you can sleep in any position that’s comfortable. During this period, you’ll have your complimentary LED scar management treatment to promote healing.

By week two, you can begin to ease back into light physical activities. Most patients are able to comfortably start driving.

6-8 weeks

Your recovery journey

You would be back to your normal daily routine and enjoying your new shape. Normal post-operative bruising and swelling should be gone, and your scars will begin to fade and diminish. You are able to fully resume normal exercise. At the end of this period you will have your post-operative complimentary laser scar treatment.

Frequently asked questions

all about Breast Reductions

The best candidates for breast reduction surgery are healthy people who have large breasts (the medical term is “macromastia”), and whose breasts are causing them to experience negative symptoms such as back pain or rashes beneath the breasts.

The first thing your surgeon will discuss with you is your breast goals. Then your surgeon will examine your breast and chest dimensions and present a number of options. Most importantly, we’ll make sure you and your surgeon are clear about your ideal outcome.

Yes, a lift is part of the reduction. Your breasts will sit up above the inframammary fold and you may now even be able to go bra-free.

While there is some conflicting scientific research, the bottom line is that not all patients are able to breastfeed after breast reduction. The tricky thing is that a lot of women, breast reduction or no, have difficulty breast feeding so it is hard to know for sure what the real percentages are.

It is also important to know there is a small chance of losing sensation to the nipple–or even part or all of the nipple-areola itself–as a result of breast reduction surgery. We also reduce the size (diameter) of the areola along with the breast reduction so the nipple is in proportion to the new breast size.

All surgery leaves scars. Most scars will fade in time, about 6-12 months, but the scars will be there in some form forever. Keep in mind that not everyone makes the same kinds of scars, this is largely genetic. Some people make pale, thin scars, while others tend to make thicker scars. Breast scars are generally minimal and we use silicone taping and laser treatments to ensure you get the best possible scars.

A breast reduction will leave a scar around the areola, (the darker skin around the nipple), one vertically (up-and-down) under the areola, and one horizontally (side-to-side) in the fold beneath the breast. These will typically be hidden by your bra after the surgery.

It really depends what sort of work you do however you can often return after a couple of weeks.

Yes, although it depends on your level of insurance cover as to whether a breast reduction cost is covered. The Medicare item number is 45523, so check with your insurance company if you are covered for this item number.

Our breast reduction surgical fee is $13,000. This includes your follow up appointments, post-operative garment, silicone tape, gel, two scar treatments and a complimentary PT consultation to assist your recovery.

In addition to this there are anaesthetist fees of $2,000 and hospital fees, which they determine. This means we can only quote you for that section after your consult once the hospital has provided their fees.

These costs will be significantly cheaper if you have appropriate private health care.
